Well I think the point of learning how to use a Bo staff is incase someone decides to attack you with one and you manage to get the weapon out of their hands (LOL!) or if; as featured in Transporter 2, you are surrounded by a large number of enemies and manage to get a large pipe to use as a weapon. At any rate, I immagine that you should be training on how to REMOVE these non-appendage weapons from the hands of someone who is using it against you. You shouldn't be carrying around throwing needles, daggers, steel fans, samurai swords, etcetera. You should be learning how to parry/avoid thrown objects without the dodgiing effecting your disposition and then using these weapons against your attacker if ever the need came.

the mind is the great weapon without it, any other weapon is useless.
training the body to work with the mind is the second greatest weapon with out this, combat is hopeless. the next greatest weapon is to make your hands (feet) in to real tools that can build as well as destroy. to heal and to make ill. To do this you need heart that is the greatest weapon of all because with it knowthing is impossible.

Well, Im really a beginner but what I've studied and am looking to study is as follows:
Favorites in orde:
Star throwing (ninjitsu) (got to yellow belt Ninjitsu)
Long stick (bo?) (Ninjitsu)
2 short sticks (dan bong)
Nunchukus
Cane (I am a novice) (canemasters.com)
My 2 fists do ok
My 2 feet do ok
Am currently studying:
better nunchuking
better 2 Dan bong
better kicking
better boxing (with gear)
better cane (it's tough!)
I feel with the pressure point to top it all off, I'm in good shape.

The use of weapon training will increase your empty hand fighting. after training for a long time with weapons you become and move more like the weapons you practice with.
yes the weapon is a extention of your hand so weapon training teaches you to move like a weapon.

My favorite weapons are the kind I can actually have with me if I ever need them. Either concealed or just unnoticed. Mostly I keep a kubaton on my keychain and a pocket knife.
Kinda hard to sneak a staff or sword into work.

Yup. And if you can pull it off a good combat cane might be worthwhile. Just walk with a limp! lol

I liked most of these replies, yes the weopons were made from whatever the tribe (farmers, nomads, etc) had available to them. Again, an extension of the limbs, same movement as if you had the weopon in your hand. Keeping modern available items in mind, broom or mop handles can be used for a bo. Umbrella as a bo or a cane.
Tessen....fan....beautiful for kata. Kung fu and Tai chi has many, many kata, single and double handed. However, I used a fan in Anaku for a tourney and won. Tessen were also used by "Geisha" as weopons for self defense, they weren't just entertaining by singing, dancing and pouring sake and tea. I have also been told that royalty had fans in their homes as decoration. Some times a guard or other in home employee could get alittle frisky with unchaperoned females. Grab a fan, Ladies.....club, stab (some were very sharp on the ends when folded), whatever you can do. I teasingly beat up my son with my fans, they're made of lightweight wood and nylon, tapping points all over the body. I tried to make him yell uncle, but instead he yelled "MOM!!!" LOL

i sometimes carry a ropedart on me. it fits in my pocket easily, looks like a regulary hankerchief, mine has a flat head so i dont spear someone. if im out jogging i just wrap it around my hand and if i were confronted i would just drop it to the ground to get it to be close range then grab it with my right hand, start spinning and if they decide to get within 5 or 6 ft of me they are gunna get hit. mine has a lenght of about 18ft but i would use only 5-6ft of range in combat so you could retract it very fast and shoot it out again "if needed".
