Learn Knife Fighting first arnis is a good system. If you don't know how to fight with a knife good luck disarming a good knife fighter. My sharpshooter key chain is made to give you the upper hand against a knife. Don't get me wrong you may use basic moves that may work if the attacker is not a skilled knife fighter. what if he has a knife in each hand and knows how to knife fight.  A sharp shooter keychain could save your ass becouse it gives you the distance you need
to stay in a safe range.  you better be a real good knife fighter to move in on a man that has two knifes and knows what he is doing. he can drop a knife but it's real hard to drop the sharp shooter.  take it from a knife fighting instructor the sharp shooter is a good legal way to defend yourself from a knife fighter.

I thought Arnis is sticks? I practice some along with small circle jujitsu but they hurt my hands (carpal tunnel) so it's not really for me.  Can you explain alittle more about the knves?

Hi Jule, I am not a teacher of the phil-M-arts. I have had some training with Grand Master Lanada about twenty years ago, when he came to Amarica. He brought with him two students, one of them was a great martial artist he demo-ed the Master's art, showing your Instructors and students not only how to work with the sticks but the 21 ways to open the Phil-knife, the use of the stick with a knife and the knife and the wipe. also a wipe with the unbrella. The master and I got along because he and I had somethings in common so he showed me more than the others about how the sticks work, which helped me alot when I trained with the sword later. The person to contact is Master Bob Moran he may be able to put you in touch with a instructor and writer for the phil-arts that in well known in the field. This I can Tell you, that the stick knife and whip is based on cutting angles just like the sword Upwards, downwards, X strike left and right, across the stomach, across the neck  and the straight stabs and so on. the whip works in the same way. I had no instruction at all with the whip but it is a short buggy type whip. For give me for my lack of information,  But I only know a small amount of stick fighting which adds up to four full weeks with the master, about twenty years ago. But with the sticks I did learned as I said before, a couple of tricks. I don't practice with the stick at all and it would only be far to point you in a better direction. so talk to bob on that point O.K.

There is someone in our organization who is in my area.  I have trained only a few times but it just hurts my hands after about 30 minutes.  And they hurt for the next couple of days.  I saw a really beautiful umbrella kata with the 12 ways to cut.  I learned a portion of it a few years back.  I have talked to him since your last post, and he told me a little about the short whip.  He teaches to students who ask about it, but it's not in his curriculum.  THanks.

Do you happen to have any video of the umbrella kata?
I would be really interested in seeing that.

Here are a few things to concerder - If your outside, pick up a Rock and hit him in the face with it, Or get a hand full of dirt -Throw the dirt into his face, or find a big stick, and hit him with it, or pull out a bigger knife Smiley But, do not try and run away - you will just die tired!
Some people that pull knife, are just bluffing - How do you tell the difference if he, or she is serious or not - If they start talking to you, you will have time to pick up "something" to help you. But if the person really wants to stick that knife into you, you will probably get cut -
I have had knifes, straight-razor's pulled on me, on the job - And I do have a nice scar on my right upper arm from a straight-razor attack - What helped me was my pepper-spray, and a well aimed punch right into his GB-3!!! I hit him real hard, he went to the hospital, and almost died - It was kind weird riding in the same Ambulance with him though Grin
