As many katas start and end and the same spot put a coin at your feet where you start your kata. If the footwork is correct then you should end at the same spot (the coin).

this is true, almost all kata returns to the starting point with exseption of a few, if this kata hasn't return to it's starting point, some or all of the foot work is off.
In the Okinawa schools some cut a notch in the floor some use tape, in the form of an I or H pattern. when at practice at home, a coin will do the trick.
Once when I was judging at a ternament I scored a black belt (first Dan) with an averge score. the persons instructor in a very angry tones, questioned me, why I gave such a low score? I thought I would piss him off alittle more by telling he that your black belt didn't come back to the starting point showing that the foot work was off, the kata was choppy with no flow or power, it was a poor showing for any black belt and I added that if you think that it should have been scored higher, that I could only imagine that your Kata suck just as badly! It worked, it did piss him off !!!!
