One day a traveling sales person came to a house.  He came right about when a lovley mother was about to make dinner for her family.  THe woman took the steak out of the 'fridge, laid it on the table and chopped the last 1/8 off and threw it away.  shocked by this action the salesman asked "why did you do that to a perfectly good steak?" the woman replied "well its what my mother always did."

aroused by stimulating conversation and fired by curosity, the sales person and the lady headed out to the woman's mother's house just up the road.  WHen they arrived, the woman asked her mom "mom, why do you always cut the last eighth of the steak?" the mother replied, "its what my mother always did"

Seeing that the grandmother lived so far away, they decicded to call her.  The woman's mother asked "why do we always cut the last eight of the steak off". the grandmother replied "back in the day, your father would cut the steaks right off the cow, fresh of the kill.  These steaks would be so big, I couldnt fit them in the pan.  I would cut the last eighth off and make it later."

in my opinion as a purest.... making up katas is what got karate in trouble.  our ancestors were very regimented on their daily katas and passed their perfections down from generation to generation.  Somewhere along the way, people started to add and take away from the katas for comfort, interpetion, and decipition.  taking your favortie moves from differnt kata's is okay for personal pratice, but we need to remember our roots.  i dont at all look it as "playing cover band music" but celebrating my martial arts heritage and right.  Too many good kata has been lost to the point of endagrement or extention all in the name of tournaments or fear, I do my best to maintain as many traditional forms as possible.

I do see your point of view but who is to say that the original creators of any kata had the "only correct" or as in your term "perfections" way of using any particular technique?

For example lets quickly examine a straight thrust punch. Just as the name states this can be used as a straight punch. But I have also used this move as a block/then immediate/simultaneous strike to the attacker.
Which way is the correct use of this technique?Huh

We do practice alot of the traditional katas as well. My kata was put together by me as a way to practice the techniques that I like the best and are able to put to work best for me.

Everybody's body size/shape/height is different so all moves will not necessarily work the same for everyone. Most of the techniques in my kata are taken from many others and re-arranged in a way that in the end turned into a small kata.

I wouldnt recommend throwing all original katas out the window but in my opinion it certainly doesnt hurt to put the mind to work to create something of my own Smiley

I appreceiate and welcome many opposing viewpoints. but you have to understand mine is always correct  Kiss
