Greetings to all and a merry Christmas,
When we talk about these 'traditional Kata' I wonderwhat we really mean by this, as to me something traditional must be something that is old, at least a 100yrs old and I wonder if there are any that old? If so, which ones are they and were do they come from?

that is a tough question to answer. From the point of 35 mm film we have a record of many forms and kata. before that time we have no documented proof other than the word of masters, and they all differ. The old drawings and scripts lets us know little about kata. and what they did, well from there, your guess is as good as mine. In some cases, the old drawing inlighten use some what, As a whole finding a form (kata) learning what you can from the masters, is a good start. But practice and think ability will tell use the most. And thats the sad facts. I think that only by looking at old footage and learning the movements and a never end mind set of " what else can this movement do" is the only teacher worth his salt.

Im short, If Kata is alive it will grow! Same thing with a System of fighting. As information on any subject become easyer to gather, and the mystery's are unlock, we can come down to a better bottom line. The same is true with Kata amd systems. I Know this is not going to be a popular answer, but it the only one I have.
HAPPY HO HO to all.

Tom I do have a copy of the Mc Carthy Bubishi as well as the other authors, who wrote on that subject. I thing that there is room for another version, one that will be clearer and more understandable. Who knows, maybe after I finish all points, which I wish to place on this web site, I may try to expand and make understand that old document. As all other charts and documrnts the strike, techniques and methods or missing. and they are the most needed property for the study and practice of any and all points.

This post was directed too Blackknight, because he had questions concerning "Traditional Kata's"
In my humble opinion, this book does cover almost every aspect of the History, also it does say that a lot of history is only theory, but I believe what this book has to say, because of all of the stuff that i have found on the internet, backs up what this book has in it - And, its well written by a Mr. McCarthy

Hello Scott; There is absolutely No Reason For YOU to feel that you have a Need to Apologize To Me, or ANY Other Person that reads this Forum
Now, having said that - Yes, I have been filming myself, and being Bran-New at it, im now trying to figure out how to copy on a CD, or a DVD
Yes, there was a program that came along with this camera, but so far, I have been just to STUPID too figure it all out - I Do Have a Practice film that is now inside my computer - and i have tried to e-mail the film to a friend, so far - And I Do Not Know Why, but - i'm being toled that the film is to large ect, ect,. I'm going to have to have some computer guy to come to my home and show me how
You Will Get It - I have had too double up on my Meds, to get through this
This is good though, cause ive always been a loner, and i have found that i'm a little camera shy when its focused On Just Me
and I do plan on placing "Nonaka Ryu Ju-jutsu" on Film too pass it along too my Grandchildren, so this does give me time too get over being shy
Also, I have asked about the p.p.'s that are with in your hard style kata's, as do they have any type of pattern? Now, of course the more points that you know, the more variations of a movement can be made ect, ect,. What i'm interested in is, for exemple; I understand that You know "Taikyoku - shodan, nidan, and sandan" Now, if you were taught the "kyusho", Was there a Progression of "Kyusho" as you studied them
And, also to clear the air, i'm not interested in this knowledge too learn = I have Enough on my plate
I'm just curious as to how kyusho was taught using your kata

+ I have asked some questions concerning Kyusho that are in Your Katas, with out a response
So, I will contact you scott to get your address too send my "Sunstorm Kata" when i'm able too send - But, I have changed my mind about placing it on your forum = Don't Do It
Kind Regards

Hi Tom
Im finally finished with my Company office move so I should have some more time to spend back on the forum,
Let me try to answer some of your questions.
As far as my kata goes. My initial though process was to put together some of my favorite moves (by favorite I mean techniques that work very well for me. they may not work for everyone) once I put together a nicley flowing kata I then went back and experimented with the various points that were targets of the strikes. I must admit that the kata currently does not look like it did when I first created it because I have changed things around quite a bit to make it work better.
Currently I am not applying the points to the 5 element theory but I may decide to do that once I consider the kata to be in its final state.
Hope this answers some of the questions.
I realize that there arent too many people posting these days. If you have any good ideas on how to get more visitors please let us know...
I was thinking of running some kind of contest. What do you think?

Good To Have You Back
Thanks for your responce
And, Yes - I Understand what your saying about your kata changing
I look at my Kata's, and my Named methods as if they were Friends of mine - And the more that I Practice Using Them, the friendlier they become too me
They All Have A Personalty as Such
Too give an example; Study the Movements of that Aikido Technique that you toled me you placed into your kata -- Remember the one that im talking about
Now, look at its personalty - when the movements are studied, and modified there will be more applications then just one - First, how many different attacks can this technique be used to defend against (grabs - shoves - strikes ect,.) As far as the Kyusho applications, (the more points you know, the more choices you will have to place into the movements of this technique)!
If memory serves = the Aikido method was used to defend against a Downward Fist Strike
Ok, the Aikido Guy, executed a downward strike too the attackers arm, then he stepped forward and took the bad guy down with what a "laymen" would call a "Close-Line" type of strike - Correct
OK - To change this aikido technique into a kyusho one - you could use the downward strike too strike into several different points on the attackers Arm, too set-up a (reverse ridge hand) strike into the side of the attackers neck, instead of the "close-line"
Anyway, that is one way that i do it

Thats kind of where I was headed with that strike myself. It just seems to be the natural feel of that that technique.
Thanks Tom
