Thanks Tyr.
I have seen many versions of that kata each with very slight differences. but this one seems very close to the way I learned it.

Now as most of use know, Nahanchi shodan has changed from school to school. But TYR's DVD of Oyata"s Shodan, in the first posture after the salutation where he is in a Nahanchi stance (horse) And one open hand is crossed over the other open hand (left over right). you can see Oyata's fingers of the left hand wrap around the right hand. this has meaning ( lost to most modern schools today) DYNAMIC TENSION.
The right hand pulling towards the right as the left hand holds the right and is pulling towards the left. This creates Dynamic tension and when used, gives added speed and power to that first strike-block. this is old school stuff, and has not been given to modern versions of Nahanchi. But it may be added to your Shodan easily. Now in the old school days, Nahanchi was the first kata you would learn and also this would be the first technique learned by all beginers. Therefore, Dynamic tension will be found and applied to all later Kata as a root foundational technique in the schools that practice Nahanchi. Oyata's Nahanchi shodan is close to the oldest form of the Kata, When practiceing this technique Dynamic tension, the goal is, as you release, and your hand flys in to the first posture, the hand should move so fast that you will hear a whistling sound! that means the goal has been met.  Now you will see Nahanchi shodan kata depending on the school step away from the attack, step into the attack and use a cross over step to attack. The application should be practiced in all three steps, not just one. Oyata version steps in to the attack, which is to cutting off the final step of the attack, this is a clue to find out what the other steps are fore.
