Watching how brutal the Utimate Fighting Championships is I would have to say that a Mixed martial art would be best IMO.

It's not what is the best style. It's what is the best style for you.
(Tip) Learn to defend yourself in all situations and aganst many people as well as one on one.  pick a style you can do for your whole life and still defend yourself  in your old age.

I agree. You dont have to be amazingly strong to take someone down using pressurepoints.

I also agree that the best style is one that you like and will stick with.

Bruce Lee's style was called  Jeet kune do.
It basically took what Bruce beleived was the best moves of many other styles.
In that respect it is very similar to our style Shin Shu Ryu.
We take what we beleive to be the best techniques that work for us and have created a new martial arts system.

Well, if you are in a life and death fight then anything goes. I would say a punch to the throat. Doesn't matter how much muscle you have, you don't have any there! So I guess street fighting/Self defense mixed with plenty of dirty tricks.

I like all of the replies and agree the best style is one you enjoy and are dedicated to practicing regularly.  My style is Shuri Ryu and Ryu Kyu Kempo integrated side by side.  Breaking down kata for either style is what makes karate so great.

windreaver, The dirtest trick I have ever learned was outside the Do Jo. I learned it by study of street fighting, watching the event. To over come any attack you must learn to open your mind and closing his! the whole thing is really about control, he ( the attacker) is in reality trying to take your mental control first then your bodys control. I will give you one example, about twenty five years ago, A man knowing before hand That I had just earned my third black belt (shorin ryu) Said as I walk up to meet him, he said so you know karate, show me! Before he finished talking I gave him a dragon snap to the groin using Dynamic tention. He lost all retention, so I helped him to the bath room so he could clean up a little. after a little time he became a student. But don't misunderstand it was not the technique I used ( the same thing happen other times, using different techniques) It was the method of the mind that work.
Just today I used this method in life, I was in my truck parked in a space and a car pulled up and parked be side me, the door opened and hit the side of my truck and scratched the door. I got out and said ha you hit my door! he said no I didn't ( this is him trying to capture my mind and take away my control. So I said to him how do you want to deal with this? He wouldn't comply so I called the police and they come, and to make a long story short, He was formt an other country without a valid driver lisence he ended up giving me more than enough money to cover the damage, then I said to him, if you had said Gee I'm So sorry, I would have just let it go. but because you waisted my time now you have to pay.
there is alway a large struggle for control, sometimes it is best to give it up, sometime it is best to take it over. It is knowing when and where and to what power you are up against that will determine how you will live life. But the trick is knowing what this is about (always control) where is the battle in the mind, then the body. so her is the rule: capture the mind the body will follow! Just like grabbing a man by the nads! his heart will follow!
